Happy Friday, Madison!

This weekend marks the start of the annual Dane County Farmers' Market.

The market boasts 220 members this year, including 20 new vendors. At the market you'll find everything from regional produce, meats, and cheeses to baked goods and specialty dog food.

The market is held rain or shine Saturdays around the Capitol Square from 6:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

Hot tip, there’s an additional market Wednesdays on Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.

🌳 This local tree just retired.

  • For nearly three decades, the Madison Cycropia Aerial Dance troupe has performed in a giant bur oak tree at the Orton Park Festival. But the tree has started to show its age and this year, the dancers have decided to give their leafy performance partner a break.
  • Recently, the tree has lost some limbs. And while it isn't diseased or in danger of being taken down immediately, it is being monitored by the city, according to the State Journal. The tree is thought to be at least 184 years old.
  • Cycropia will still perform at the festival this year but will do so on a portable rig.

💸 The city is getting more federal funds to rebuild John Nolen Drive.

  • The U.S. Department of Transportation is granting Madison $15.1 million to aid the replacement of six bridges on the John Nolen Drive causeway.
  • Roughly 45,000 vehicles travel down John Nolen Drive every day, according to WKOW. Though the bridges are in fair condition, the government has noted they're also between 48 and 55 years old and should be replaced before they fail.
  • In total, the project is estimated to cost $30 million. The federal government previously gave the city $11 million for the project. Construction could start as soon as 2025.

⛔️ Don't forget the construction on East Wash.

  • The westbound side of East Washington Avenue has been reduced to one lane and will remain that way for the next two months, so plan your travel accordingly.
  • Why? Construction that includes pavement replacement and water and sanitary updates.

🐒 Your lunchtime read: Opinion | I worked at the UW primate lab, and the inhumanity still haunts me.

  • Via Cap Times: "When you work in an environment where life is disposable, you either start to believe it’s true or dissociate and emotionally shut down to survive. I did the latter and have spent years battling PTSD as a result.

In college, I worked for two years as a student animal caretaker at the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Harlow Primate Laboratory. I was passionate about nonhuman primates, eager to follow in the footsteps of Jane Goodall. I knew little about animal research and believed that early experience working with monkeys would be important for my future career in primate conservation."

🐶 Friday Floof

Time for some floof! This week's dose of cuteness is Teddy. He's a Great Pyrenees mix from a local rescue. According to his human, Teddy's favorite activities include napping, eating string cheese, "keeping a look out for wabbits," and lots more napping.
