Watch out for snow plows
Morning update: Friday, Dec. 9
In this newsletter

Happy Friday, Madison!
Yesterday we passed an incredible milestone in our year-end campaign: we officially have more than 400 supporting members!
We're on a quest to reach 500 supporters by the end of the year so we can keep Madison Minutes going (and growing) in the new year. Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far.
The biggest story of the day is undoubtedly the weather. We've had a pretty mild winter so far but the city is bracing for lots of snow today and this weekend.
Heavy, wet snow is expected to fall throughout the day, and the worst of it could come during the morning commute. The city is urging drivers to use caution since the roads will be slippery. Expect to see plow trucks out and about!

☃️ Speaking of snow, have you seen our Madison winter survival guide?
- Whether you just moved to Wisconsin’s capital city or have lived here for decades, you might need to brush up on tips to help you thrive during winter. We've put together a bunch of resources for you all in one convenient spot.
- Check it out!
🐠 From the folks who brought you Mint Mark and Muskellounge, get ready for Hank's.
- The owners of the east side's Muskellounge are opening a fast-casual fish fry and burger spot next year in the former Lake Edge Seafood Company space.
- The new joint, named Hank's after one of the owner's dogs, will focus on takeout. With limited seating of its own, customers will be encouraged to bring their food next door to The Musky.
- Hank's could be open by late spring, according to the Cap Times.
🛍️ Support local Black businesses this weekend.
- After a two-year pandemic-induced hiatus, the annual Christmas Bazaar is back at S.S. Morris Community African Methodist Episcopal.
- This Saturday and Sunday, vendors will be at the east side church selling crafts, clothes, baked goods, and more.
- "We love welcoming people. And we just love our community. And this is one way that we demonstrate our love for the community by opening up our doors and having people come in," Rev. Karla Garcia told Madison365.

♻️ Avoiding waste during the holiday season.
- 'Tis the season for tinsel and tissue paper. Here are some tips from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for having a sustainable holiday.
- Know what can (and can't) be recycled. Cardboard, newspapers, aluminum cans, and glass are all good to recycle. Tissue paper, holiday lights, and plastic bags go in the trash.
- Prevent food waste by shopping smarter. Always shop with a list and make substitutions with products you have when possible. Additionally, know that expiration dates may not mean food has gone bad (except infant formula products).

🎸 Your lunchtime read/look: Smart Studios building's new owner honors its rocking roots.
- Via Cap Times: "The outside of the building hasn't changed much in decades, but the interior is getting a whole new look and feel thanks to 36-year-old Kenosha native, Neka Allen. Allen, a director of analytics for a consumer goods company and student of interior design purchased the building for under $500,000 in September 2021 after it spent nearly two years on the market.
According to Allen, the building was in rough shape and in need of some love. She got right to work; turning the space into both her home and a future Airbnb, while paying homage to the building's history as Smart Studios." - Related: At home at the former Smart Studios (Tone Madison)
